A rug has the power to tie a whole room together.
When contemplating rug size, it's important to select dimensions and orientation that are proportional to the space. For instance, if you have a large living room, opt for a large rug. If you have a long dining room, mimic its dimensions.
If you're debating between two sizes, we suggest choosing the larger option.
As a first step, always measure the room and the furniture. Then decide your layout. These two steps determine your rug size.
Here are a couple of our favorite layout options:
All Legs on the Rug
In a large space, you can define the seating area by placing a furniture grouping entirely on the rug. This unifies and anchors open-concept spaces when no furniture is against a wall.
Two Legs on the Rug
One of our favorite ways to make a room look cohesive is to choose a size that allows for the front legs in the furniture grouping to be on the rug. We call this the "two leg" rule, where two legs of a sofa or chair (or the first half of a piece) sit on the rug. This layout works especially well when one part of the furniture grouping is against a wall.
